Very few of us are blessed with the hair of natural curls, however thanks to technology one doesn’t need to fret anymore. We can obtain heavy curls or soft curls in a span of a just a few minutes and flaunt various types of curly hairstyles, in the comfort of our home.
Stylists advise the use of curling irons, rather than curling the hair with harsh chemicals like perming or other hair treatments to obtain the desired texture and style. If the hair has already been processed, coloured or straightened, it is recommended to avoid the curling the hair, as the hair may react to the harsh chemicals, leading to sever damage.
Before chemically curling or perming the hair, a ‘strand test’ is suggested to gauge the reaction of the chemicals with the hair. If the hair reacts negatively, the processing should be immediately terminated. The hair should be deeply conditioned before curling, as perming involves use of harsh chemicals which destroys the nourishment from the hair, making it dry and rough.
Mild shampoos, especially frizz control shampoos should be used after curling the hair, to avoid damage. Conditioners containing rich moisturizers, preferably ‘leave-in conditioners’ should be used to protect the hair. Mix and match of hair products should be avoided, to avert damage. Use of showers during hair baths should be circumvented, as they are harsh on the curls, thus draining them out. Only cold water should be used on curled hair, as hot water straightens the curls.
The use of blow dryers and warm hair dryers should be avoided for long lasting curls. These warm equipments make the hair frizzy instead of curly. Cold blow dryer could be used to add shine to the hair. After washing the hair, a towel should be used to dry the hair naturally. Thin combs and brushes should not be utilized as they destroy the curls. For best results, fingers should be used to undo the knots.
Hair serum or gel should be used to protect the curls; causing a long lasting effect which adds shine and bounce to the hair. To obtain crisp curls, a curling iron could be used but only on completely dry hair, as the heat could burn the hair shaft. Hair shine or gel should be used to add bounce and shine to the hair and block the humidity. For curls only on the lower half of the hair, one could apply hair straightening gel on the top to separate the curls on the lower half from the top of the head.
Sport the curls with attitude and enjoy the compliments you receive.
